The timeline is a great way to look at an overview of your project. When you first install Project, the view that you see when you open a project has the timeline at the top and the Gantt Chart beneath it.
Depending on what you want to see, you can display one view that takes up the whole project window, or show one view in the primary pane and another view in the Details pane.
